About ThePowerFromPort
ThePowerFromPort is a culmination of several efforts since 1997 to provide
Port Adelaide Power and Magpie supporters with up-to-date information and
results. Once I started using the net back in the Power's first year in the
AFL, I found that there were many supporters living away from South Australia
and eager to know how both Port teams were doing. At the time there were no
official sites.
The Port News Zone as it was then known started off small with a free website
and mailing lists to email information to these supporters. It didn't take
long for word to get around and people began to request more information.
I eventually found myself with the offer of a free domain and progressed to a
fully hosted site at portnewszone.com. Not long after I was approached
to do news and results for the official Port Magpie website and to host
two email lists for both clubs that were previously linked on their website.
As Rivals.net looked toward starting their AFL section, The Port News Zone
came to the attention of staff who then approached me to be the editor of
their Port Adelaide website. The decision was made by myself to start fresh
with a completely new domain.
ThePowerFromPort was born and joined Rivals.net alongside several well
known AFL fan sites including RedandWhiteOnline, Dockerland.com &
BomberBlitz.com. After two seasons Rivals.net was so popular that they were
made an offer they didn't want to refuse and were taken over. The new owners
decided to branch away from covering as many sports as possible from all over
the world to concentrate on just a few of the most popular in England. The AFL
sites were cut with the biggest ones choosing to remain online with
alternative hosting. Ironically they cut the AFL sites just as Telstra took
over the official AFL sites and many supporters were complaining about the new
Telstra run sites. Had Rivals chosen to keep the AFL sites going there may
have been an even bigger increase to what was already a popular group of sites
on their network.
In the first year of hosting the site on my own after leaving Rivals.net, Mark
kindly offered to help me with the site and now does most of the technical
work and design leaving me free to concentrate on the news and moderating the
forums. Without his help the site wouldn't be what it is today as he has put
together a lot of the historical information which takes up a lot of his spare
time.
In 2003 after Port lost to Sydney at home in the finals, Michaelangelo Rucci
printed quotes from our members stating their disappointment and included the
site address in his Advertiser article which led to a significant increase in members.
When we decided to move the site to new servers we had a glitch which saw our
members having to sign up all over again. It took most of 2004 to get back to the
membership we had before.
ThePowerFromPort is an alternative to the official sites with supporters
able to interact with each other. The site is updated daily and usually more
than once a day during the season, with news and results for Port Adelaide
Power & Magpies as well as the AFL & SANFL. With such a large membership base
it's easy to keep up with the latest news not only from the admins but also
the supporters who report what they hear on the media sometimes before there
is anything official up on the net.
Membership is free and all we ask is that you supply a valid email address
(i.e. one that really works if we try to email you). We test every email
address and if it comes back as non-existent we don't approve the membership.
If you sign up please be patient. We aren't always online to approve members
and you will not be able to log into your account and post until we have
approved it.
